8/29/2023 0 Comments Fortinbras hamletObviously, he needs an income, and the way nobles secured an income in those days was to go to war and steal other people’s wealth and land, so he’s been busy raising an army (in those days, there were no standing armies like we’re used to, so you just went around the cities and countryside recruiting men). The winner got the loser’s property, so Fortinbras not only lost his father, but his inheritance. Fortinbras is a Norwegian prince whose father (Old Fortinbras) was killed by Hamlet’s father (Old Hamlet) in single combat. Like Richmond in Shakespeare’s Richard III, Fortinbras is on stage just long enough to take the crown, but I should probably start by breaking down what’s going on.
